Voted Brazil’s Best Science Park in 2013 by the Brazilian Association of Science Parks and Business Incubators (Anprotec – Associação Nacional de Entidades Promotoras de Empreendimentos Inovadores), the UFRJ Science Park is an environment of cooperation between entrepreneurs and the academic community. Its aims are the strengthening of innovation capacity, the creation of wealth and the society’s well-being.
Two historical milestones were crucial to the emergence of the Science Park. In 1963, the creation of the Institute for Graduate Studies and Research in Engineering (Coppe – Instituto de Pós-Graduação e Pesquisa em Engenharia) at UFRJ paved the way to the development of other innovative initiatives in the University. Then, ten years later, in 1973, the establishment of a Research Center by Petrobras on the island promoted the interaction between companies and UFRJ.
The Park has a team specialized in promoting the interaction between: the companies of the Park, the start-ups of Coppe Business Incubator and the research units of UFRJ. This way, the Park fosters partnerships that are capable of creating innovation. Moreover, it assists in the management of small and medium sized companies that are established there and prepares activities that stimulate the relation between the resident organizations and other publics of interest. The Parks also helps to expand the networking of companies, especially of the small companies and those that are in an early stage of development.
In addition to the proximity to the academia, to the cutting edge research and highly qualified labor force, the Park offers the right infrastructure to welcome companies from all sizes and sectors. Among the offered services are: cleaning and public lighting, 24/7 security, monitored patrols, urban areas with optical fiber, sustainable lighting, garbage collection, civil and electrical maintenance of common areas. Currently, 14 national and international big companies, 23 startups, 7 R&D labs and 9 small and medium-sized companies are settled in the Park.
